Musical Advent Calendar 2013 – December 3

Today, we open up our first bona fide Christmas classic on the musical advent calendar – The Ronettes’ “Sleigh Ride”.

There have been literally hundreds of versions of this song recorded over the years, but this is the one I like best.  And maybe more importantly, my 15-year-old son recently informed me that this is his favorite version of the song and one of his favorite Christmas songs.  The fact that he can appreciate the greatness of this gem from the classic, Phil Spector produced A Christmas Gift For You From Philles Records, fills my eyes with tears and my heart with pride.  I have trained you well, boy!

Save for Darlene Love’s “Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home)”, this is the signature track on this epic album.  Spector’s wall of sound production style is shown-off at its best, while retaining the song’s traditional structure and feel.  And those horse sounds at the beginning and end of the recording are the happiest holiday whinnies I’ve ever heard.  They honestly make me feel good inside when I hear them.  That’s Christmas magic, baby!
