Musical Advent Calendar 2013 – December 2

About ten years ago, Broadway and San Francisco musical theater veteran Clark Sterling helped assemble a number of popular local artists for a compilation Christmas album called Christmas by the Bay. He wrote the lyrics for the title track, and asked singer Tim Hockenberry to sing it for the album. The result is magical.

Most people don’t know who Tim Hockenberry is, though he gained some national recognition following his favorable run on American’s Got Talent in 2012. He has a voice and style that lands somewhere between Tom Waits and Marc Cohn. He has released a handful of mostly independent albums, but it is this performance of “Christmas By The Bay” that stands tallest in his repertoire.

This song just sounds like San Francisco to me.  Since first hearing it a few years ago, it has become one of my favorites at Christmas.  Having grown up and lived most of my life in the Bay Area, I am certainly biased about the greatness of this track.  But my bias is your gain, because now you get to hear it!

Let’s open up day two of the musical advent calendar – Tim Hockenberry’s “Christmas by the Bay”.
