I am infatuated with a five-song ep from the new band WE ARE TWIN.  No, they are not actually twins.  Yes, they spell their name with all caps.  And yes, they might be that good.

Essentially, WE ARE TWIN are two people.  Nicholas Balachandran and Gabi Christine grew up in different parts of the world, but suggest that their musically creative minds must have been somehow separated at birth.  Thus, the TWIN motif.  In the video for their single “The Way We Touch”, we see Balachandran and Christine building a band to play their music.  Literally.  Take a look.

The video is fun, but only because the song is so good.  Christine’s vocals have a bluesy vibe that sounds so tasty alongside this dance-friendly, pop-rock tune.  But for as good as this track is, I don’t think it’s the best song on their self-titled ep.  It might be “Keep On Loving You”, a feel-good song that picks up the pace and takes to musically joyous places we haven’t been to since Katrina took us for a walk on the sunshine with her Waves some thirty years ago.  Or maybe it’s “Cold Stone Lips”, a retro-vibed stomp about a relationship about to explode into “something beautiful.”  Maybe it’s “Don’t Tell Your Parents”, as I’ve believed lately.  There’s something Phil Specter-ish about this one.  Not in its production, so much, but more in the song structure.  It’s got just the right amount of nostalgia to bring me back to my youth without being schmaltzy.  And I dig it!

Or, maybe “The Way We Touch” is the best song after all.  That’s how good this mini-collection is!  It’s happy music, about falling in love.  And it recognizes how strong that is, emotionally, without minimizing the expression to some base sexual metaphor.  It speaks to the potential greatness of love.  Even “True Love”, the one song here that sounds a little down-beat, suggests true love can pull two people through the most difficult times.  This is uplifting pop music.

Bottom line – I love WE ARE TWIN.  I can’t wait for them to get a full album out.  I hope this is just the start of something bigger for them.  They make pop music that deserves to be heard.

One Response to “WE ARE TWIN.”

  1. […] 12 and 1/2.  We Are Twin – We Are Twin   “Twelve and a half?  Dude, you’re kind of pushing it, now.”  I know, I know.  But the five-song We Are Twin ep is not technically a full album, so I couldn’t fairly include it in the top twelve albums.  But the five songs are so incredibly good, it is my belief that had We Are Twin fleshed out a full album, it would have been strong enough to belong.  These songs are pop monsters that I want you to listen to.  In fact, I wrote more about it here.
