When are we going to see THIS on MTV?

Fred and Lorraine

After giving so much thought this morning to the decline of pop culture, I wanted to post something completely counter to that topic.

I give you our new pop-culture hero, 96 year-old Fred Stobaugh.

This video has been circulating quite a bit lately.  If you haven’t seen it, please take ten minutes to watch it now.  It is simple, yet extraordinarily inspirational.  For me, this is the kind of love that could rescue our culture from its self-centered, get what’s mine nature.  While the video only gives us a glimpse of Fred and Lorraine Stobaugh’s 75 year romance, the joy in Fred’s eyes after hearing his song brought to life tells an even bigger story than his words ever could.

And let’s also give credit to Jacob Colgan and the team at Green Shoe Studios in Peoria, Illinois. While I don’t know much of Colgan’s story either, it’s clear that he didn’t have to take the time he did to bring “Sweet Lorraine” to life for Mr. Stobaugh. But he did. He gave his time and resources to make this inspirational tribute more than just words on paper. He took the time to read an unsolicited letter and had enough awareness to realize that this wasn’t just something to dismiss. He realized that this was something bigger than the songwriting contest his studio was running.

So enough of me – take ten minutes now to enjoy this story.  Go ahead and grab a tissue or two, also.  You know, just in case.
